5 Things You Neeed to Know Today: Sept. 21

Friday, the happiest day of the week.

1. Park(ing) Day: Stop by the open-air Park(ing) Day demonstration on Main Street today, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. I will be there, working and waiting for you. What's Park(ing) Day, you ask? Get the scoop right here.

2. Yes, Virginia...: It was 115 years ago today that the New York Sun published its "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" letter to the editor. That can mean only one thing: There are only 95 shopping days left until Christmas.

3. Happy Hobbit Anniversary: It was 75 years ago today that JRR Tolkien published "The Hobbit," and I, for one, am forever grateful. Speaking of which, did you see the trailer for "The Hobbit"? It looks great! And while you're waiting, you can go to the official website and create your own ending with the interactive tools. That's kind of fun, too.

4. If it's McFree, it's for Me: Mark your free coffee calendar for Sunday, when McDonald's will start giving a way free small Newman's Own Organic coffee to customers, just a promotional way of saying "thank you." No purchase necessary. Promotion runs through Sept. 29.

5. Birthday Shout Out: Stephen King is celebrating his 65th birthday today! What's your all-time favorite Stephen King book? Add it in the comment field below.
