VIDEO: Activists Call on Congress for Immigration Reform

A group of about 100 labor union, civic-minded and faith-based activists rallied at City Hall Saturday.

More than 100 people gathered on Main Street April 6 for an immigration rally, sending a message to Congress in support of immigration reform, as part of a national week of action.

Participants include:

  • Labor organizations including NH AFL-CIO, SEIU Local 615 and Local 1984;
  • Members and supporters of NH Alliance of Immigrants and Refugees (NHAIR), American Friends Service Committee, Bridges Domestic & Sexual Violence Support, Granite State Organizing Project and NH Civil Liberties Union; and,
  • Faith-based groups including NH Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services and the United Church of Christ Immigration Working Group.

They say their message to lawmakers is that they want a "clear and direct path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants" living and working in the United States.

The rally began at City Hall at about 11 a.m. for a series of speakers, before participants marched north on Main Street, congregating outside the Nashua offices of Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, garnering beeps from passing motorists along the way.

“It is time to pass a real immigration reform,” said Eva Castillo, NHAIR Executive Director. “We urge our legislators to support a law that includes a path to citizenship for the millions of workers and families that have contributed to the U.S. economy for years."
