LETTERS: Didn't Like Seeing Gun Displayed in Church

'Those who advocate for the Second Amendment should practice mindfulness in reverent surroundings.'

Dear Nashua Patch:

I have observed more and more gun owners carrying in public the past 10 years in Greater Nashua.

As an advocate of the Second Amendment to Our American Constitution, I support the right to keep and bear arms. However, I noticed an individual during the Nashua Winter Holiday Stroll this past weekend who did not have a concealed weapons permit and was practicing their right to carry – yet doing so in a house of worship. Mind you, they were with their family and displayed no signs of outward hostility.

Just because someone has the right to do so, does not mean that it is not poor form and judgment to bring a loaded and holstered weapon into a sacred space or its building. There are social customs and manners that keep a society civil.

Freedom of choice should always be preserved as an American Heritage, but an individual’s respect and recognition for time and place to carry is equally as important as having the right and responsibility to carry. Those who advocate for the Second Amendment should practice mindfulness in reverent surroundings.

A hand gun is a tool, it has one job. I wonder what this gun-carrier thinks his gun is for.

Good news is that he was much more likely to shoot himself than anyone else.

I actually think it serves a useful purpose for folks to open-carry their guns. Most voters don't think often-enough about guns and this country's epidemic of gun violence. Perhaps being confronted with the reality of the situation will raise their level of awareness.

Perhaps they'll ask: "Why does that person feel the need to carry a gun? What could be the ramifications of them carrying a gun? I wonder how many other people here are carrying concealed? I wonder how many are mentally unstable? I wonder if that person carrying a gun makes me safer or less safe?"

Maybe that will even affect their future votes!

Well, Mr. Atlant, if you're not fond of the open-carry law in N.H. or Nashua, then give your state rep a call, and look for someone to start a petition to get an amendment to where you can & can't carry.

"Mind you, they were with their family and displayed no signs of outward hostility."

Outward signs? It could be that the individual had death threats directed at them or their family. People can be attacked in a church; they are open to the public. This past august there was a shooting at a church in Wisconsin. There have been recent shootings in movie theaters, malls, etc.

So you're suggesting that this person was afraid?

Personal protection is the top reason most people have a gun. Usually the hostility is not "outward"; can't be seen by someone looking at the gun owner.

Mr. Lowrance really should put on his specs and pick up a Bible sometime. Turning to Luke 22:35 we find Jesus telling His disciples that times had changed. Quoting:

Luke 22:35: And he said to them, “When I sent you without a money bag and without wallet and shoes, did you lack anything? And they were saying to him, “Nothing!”

Luke 22:36: He said to them, “From this hour, whoever has a money bag should take it and thus also a wallet, and whoever lacks a sword, let him sell his tunic and buy a sword for himself."

Times have indeed changed, as have weapons. Swords for HIs followers in the first Century, guns in the 21st. But the days when few American homes or churches had no locks and crime rates were infinitesimal have gone forever. And it is time for those who would live in peace to heed His words.

Sell your clothing if you must, but arm yourself. In particular, arm yourself where people gather for those places are the most likely to attract "active killers" like James Holmes.

So what's the point? A piece of metal. A church/house of worship/religion? Which one has done more killing/damage???
