NASHUA, NH - Ryan Manseau has learned to expect the unexpected.
For example, he walked into the Pheasant Lane Mall looking for a fight. He was all ready to metaphorically shake his fist at Chick-Fil-A over its corporate stance on gay marriage, something company CEO Dan Cathy recently said, invites "God's judgement on our nation."
Instead, Manseau ended up shaking hands with local franchise owner Anthony Piccola, so to speak, as they struck an unexpected deal.
"It started out as a prank," said Manseau, senior director of the NH Pride Fest, of his gay pride canvassing at the mall. His plan was to plant some NH Pride Fest flyers amongst the Chick-Fil-A catering menus outside the mall-based restaurant, for effect.
"After we made the rounds in the mall with the flyers, we circled back by Chick-Fil-A and we spotted a guy who looked like a manager holding the flyer," Manseau said, who was distributing flyers with fellow event organizers Matthew Richards, 19, and Tara Powell, 27.
"So we went up to him ready to talk, to stand our ground. Shockingly enough, he was the owner, Anthony Piccola. He sat down with us – and also with his gay marketing director – and he ordered us all lunch. Then he said, 'Are are you looking for sponsors for this thing?'" Manseau said.
And that's how the owner of a local Chick-Fil-A called for a truce in the midst of a national food fight that has nothing to do with food.
With his offer of event sponsorship, Piccola took a bold stance on what it means to be a part of the community he serves, Manseau said.
"Yeah, there's still paperwork to fill out, but it looks like Chick-Fil-A will be manning a 10-by-10 booth and giving out free food at Pride Fest," Manseau said.
Attempts by Nashua Patch to reach Piccola Tuesday night were unsuccessful. However, a statement quoting Piccola was shared by Pride Fest organizers:
“Chick-fil-A at Pheasant Lane Mall has gay employees and serves gay customers with honor, dignity and respect,” Picolia said. “We also don’t discriminate in giving back to the Nashua community, donating to a wide variety of causes. I would challenge people to come have a conversation with me before they make assumptions or boycott my restaurant.”
Manseau said the turn of events was the last thing he expected, but he's glad he took the time to sit down with Piccola.
"With all the national attention right now, it must be hard to be in his situation. I told him we're expecting 2,000 people at Pride Fest. This is not a little movement, but he's on board," Manseau said. "I was really impressed that he manned up and came over to us and, in his own way, made his own protest of what the CEO of the corporation has to say about homosexuality. It's astonishing."
Manseau said he doesn't think Cathy understood the gravity of his comments last week, or what the repercussions would be for franchise owners.
"What [Piccola has] been dealing with, since all of this started, is people in line for food saying, 'We love you because you hate the gays,' standing next to people in line saying, 'We won't eat here again because you hate the gays.' The thing is, Anthony's not politically or religiously motivated; he's just a business owner."
Fellow Pride Fest organizer Autumn Kent called Piccola's gesture "brave," and said it means a lot, in the scheme of things.
"It's brave of him and I think it's also wonderful, from the perspective of the local focus we've tried to have with Pride Fest, working with locally-owned businesses," Kent said. "Things are happening on the national stage, but when you get down to the local level, and people in our towns start connecting with each other, it's a different story."
"When the conversation starts, person to person, it changes the way we see the world," Kent said.
The Pride Fest, set for Aug. 11 in Manchester's Veterans Park, will feature a pride march, a family-friendly drag show, musical performances, speakers and a puppy drag parade, "open to all pets, not just puppies – we think it's the first puppy drag parade in the nation," added Kent.
Manseau, 21, said it's been a long time since New Hampshire has organized a pride fest, and never one of this magnitude. He has been working hard to get it off the ground, says Manseau, because it's time.
"When I was coming out, things were different. I decided it would be easier to be straight, so I did everything a straight high school student could do – and almost sacrificed my life a few times in the process," Manseau said.
"Finally, I stepped out and said I am just going to be gay and be happy. But I also realized that what would've made it so much easier for me was if there was a community there for me. When kids call you 'faggot' and 'homo,' and you're the only one standing there, you feel so alone. I'm hoping that by pulling together all the venues, the clubs, the organizations, and bringing this event to the park and making it huge, it will show people they aren't alone."
He said early on they were hoping to get 300 attendees, if that. But based on their most recent extrapolations from Twitter and Facebook response, it looks like the event could produce upwards of 2,000 people.
"And we want to shine a light on Anthony and Chick-Fil-A, because this is such a huge gesture," Manseau said.

I hope he looked first at his franchise agreement, or has another biz in place also
I can just see cathy rewriting the basic franchise agreement. Every cake must be made in the form of a cross.
BTW how many people realize that religion is very symbolic and the cross is an instrument of torture and murder
As someone else said - if Jesus had been hanged , the xtians would be wearing little nooses
Which for them is actually symbolic, given that sitans murdered tens of millions of mulsims in the crusades and some of them murdred 6 million jews in the holocaust. as welll as using "a slave shall obey his master" in their holy book
Mormons - some of them - use their Book of Mormon to object to gays having full citizenship rights.
While most (not all) conveniently ignore their holy book where it says you need 3 wives to go to heaven.
While saying gay marriage will lead to polygamy - go figure.....

So Dave Cathy says "gay marriage is wrong", is blasted as homophobic, bigoted, hateful, and etc. Even has to temporarily shut down one restaurant for a bomb threat.
Ryan Manseau says "gay marriage is ok" and is lauded for taking a bold stand against discrimination, making a "huge gesture", giving "hope" to people.
Yeah, something is wrong with this picture.

Neither God or Jesus have a stance on the subject, just false prophets misinterpreting their words.

"The haters are on the gay side"? In a word, no. We welcome diversity and differing mindsets. We welcome those that have different choices than us, and though we may not want those choices personally, we do not label them as 'wrong', because they aren't. What *is* wrong, jrmetalman, is telling another that his/her choices of life are wrong when they have zero impact on you, or for that matter, anyone but him- or herself. Do, please, remember that according to your very Bible “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven." (Matther 6:1). Further, if "hating" to you, as your post suggests, is "giving voice to the downtrodden"? Well dang, give me more of that skewed brand of "hate", because I don't know too many others who would see that as "hate".

Lots of Christians study the Bible and Jesus' life and don't agree with the ignorant, uninformed garbage your right-wing pseudo-Christian cult claims is Christian. And lots of liberals are REAL Christians who aim to live Christ-like lives. Your understanding of the Bible is incredibly flawed -- I assume you are depending on some out-of-context English translation, instead of reading in in the original Greek, Hebrew, and/or Aramaic and with a proper historical context? For example, the "lying with a man as with a woman" to which the book refers is specifically pagan worship rites that involved homosexual activity, not the activity itself. And the word that is mistranslated as "abomination" does not mean "a vile, shameful, or detestable action" - the word "to'evah" means "something that makes one ritually impure and requires a cleansing in the ritual bath, or mikvah." Which is exactly what every woman needs to do every month after her period, by the way.

He CHOOSES to believe that there is a God as he understands God to be from his reading of the Bible, and therefore his beliefs about gays are also his choice. Being "pro-God" to the extent that you believe that YOUR conception of God should apply ton anybody but yourself is being "pro-yourself" because it means you are holding your judgment as to what the truth is over the judgment of anybody else as to what the truth is. People like Dan Cathy are the arrogant ones.

Jan Schmidt is right... it is also right to respect a decent person's attempt to run a small busness in a community of diversity, who is willing to sponser events for gays, just as they would for other causes that are relevant in that community... when it comes to sales, the head honcho CEO has admitted he is not opposed to profitting on sales to gays... the problem is that while he indiscriminantly sales to gays he also very discriminately supports anti-gay organizations... which individual store owners might not themselves do... so... I think francise owners will be made to unduly suffer unless they too can be brave enough to prove they support the rights of gays... not just their right to buy their chicken, but the right to enjoy all the liberty associated with non-gays, including marriage.... In fact... laywers should perhaps become involved to protect those store owners from any ill-treatment by the CEO and make it easier for store owners... who have to consider their families and their employees with families to feed... to take the high road without fear of reprisal or inferior relationship with the CEO....

So opposing the attack on marriage that homosexual "marriage" seeks to do is hate for homosexuals? It's either join the homosexual agenda or you hate homosexuals??
Do people who oppose polygamy 'hate' Muslims, Mormons and others who want to "love" more than one person?
Is it 'hate' to oppose lowering the age of consent to accommodate the homosexual pedophiles in NAMBLA? And yes, court cases are already in progress to allow "love" between grown men and pre-adolescent boys.
Is 'hate' the reason people oppose that?
What about beastiality? I heard a guy from Maine call a radio show to profess his "love" for his female collie - and he is trying to get laws changed so they can "marry".
The Chick-fil-A controversy is about homosexual HATRED for free speech that is contrary to their agenda to 'normalize' homosexuality and homosexual acts.

Chic-Fil-A's Mr. Cathy's statement has been so distorted it is riduculous. He is only saying that he supports the Biblical definition of marriage and stands by it as a business owner. He never said anything about hating anyone. Understand that our issue as Christians is not with same sex relationships, that is the couples choice and not for us to condemn or judge. Our issue is with same sex relationships wanting to define their union as a marriage. Marriage was created by God and it is defined as being between a man and a woman...period!. It is not for anyone to redefine any more than to decide a horse should be called a bird. It is what it is and not up for debate. So, that means that same sex relationships must create their own name for their union and petition the government to give that union, whatever name is decided, the same legal rights as married couples. That is what is all about anyway isn't it...equal rights? So please get this into the right perspective and see it for what it is and take up this issue with the government to recognize your union and stop blaming this on something that is not up for debate.
Rosemarie Rung

Gays aren't fighting for a "marriage created by God." They are seeking a civil marriage by the government. It has nothing to do with religion. By the way, the government used to ban marriages between a man and a woman if they were of differing races.
Kevin Michael Cochran
4:25 pm on Wednesday, August 1, 2012
Nicely stated, and absolutely true. Being neither a Christian or a homosexual, it was easy for me to see the initial statement from an objective, non-bias viewpoint. Unfortunately any time an issue comes up like this (which really should have never even been an issue) it becomes so polarizing that everyone runs to their separate corners and loses all common sense.
Roger Klorese

It doesn't matter what he SAYS -- what matters is that his company and foundation have donated millions of dollars to political movements that oppose equal access to civil marriage. Like it or not, marriage is a civil legal status -- whatever your religion has, whether they call it marriage, troth, or shmoodlepoodle, is totally irrelevant from a legal and governmental perspective. Government shouldn't even acknowledge church marriages.

Marriage is taking the body of the one missing the rib and merging them with the body of the missing rib, to make one complete person before God, This is called Marriage. There is also the Baptism which is death to yourself and being reborn in Christ. These are things of God, and God has already given the rules for this. The bible does have a stance on gay marriage Romans 1:24-32 is a big example.
Christians should tolerate homosexuals and love them but that doesn't mean that they must accept the sin behind them. That is what the CEO of chick fil a does he still loves them, he doesn't say they can't eat his food or his companies can't help the community, he supports god.
If only people would understand the bible... And why it is so worth living for.....

If you think you can force your bible on others, I can find some muslim friends who would like to force their Koran and sharia law on you.
what goes around come around.
Maybe you can also use your bible to enslave blacks once again - a slave shall obey his master, and see the master as second only to Jesus.
Your the same type of people who made America the 2nd to last nation to end slavery .in the western world.

Your boss is your master..what does slavery have to do with that?
As far as forcing religious laws on folks.. we see that everyday with the humanist liberal agenda trying to force their doctrine on us... such as the teaching of paganism in schools under the guise of earth day, the teaching of a religion that is totally bankrupt of scientific fact to back it up ( called evolution ) the forced indoctrination of our children to sexual perversion under the guise of tolerance..take a look at the results.. child rape is at an all time high, so are suicides, crime in general.. you are right what comes around comes around, and we are seeing the fruit of our turning from God to the religion of man.. and it's gonna get worse.. much worse

Wow, Campbell, totally nutso. There is nothing "pagan" about Earth Day; evolution is neither a religion nor without fact (clearly you don't understand what a SCIENTIFIC theory is -- it doesn't mean it's not fact), and crime in general is actually down. So persist in your fictions and fantasies.

To those of you saying this isn't a corporate issue, look at the facts: Does Chik-Fil-A, as a company, ban homosexuals, women, and interracial couples from working for them? There is a lawsuit on the books from a woman claiming she was fired from her position at Chik-Fil-A to "be a stay-at-home mom." Does Chik-Fil-A, as a company, support groups, financially, politically, etc, that fight against civil rights? Chik-Fil-A, in 2010, donated $5 million to certified hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center, including the Family Research Council, National Organization for Marriage, and others. Does this company provide spousal benefits to same-sex spouses who have been legally married? No.
What Cathy had to say is, yes, free speech. However, it drives home that Chik-Fil-A is a company who, while claiming to be based on Biblical principles, neglects the second most important rule set out by the godhead of Chistianity: Jesus. "Love thy neighbor as thyself." I'm not boycotting the company for their right to free speech (which, by the way, does NOT mean they won't be criticized and ostracized for what they say; it just means they can say it). I am boycotting the company based on their policies and lack of civil equality.
I'm a genderqueer polyamorous pansexual who is in a heterosexual engagement, a political independent who leans left on social issues and right on economic issues, and a proud Pagan who grew up in a Christian home and honors the teachings of Jesus.

Chick fil A ,donated $5 million in 2010 to groups which support America and defend against the hate of homos.
What Cathy had to say is, yes, free speech. He says he stands with Christ, he loves everyone, and gives equal treatment to all, but will not accept wrong as being right.
If your a Christian, you follow Christ, if you do not follow Christ you are not a Christian. seems very clear to me.
If you have a building which says it is a Church, but you do not follow the Word of God, it is NOT a Christian church.

Where is the hate in "homos?" All we want to do is have a loving family that is seen as EQUAL. We want our children to be safe at school. We want our spouses to be able to pick up our childrten, to be able to visit them in the hospital, and to have custody over them if we die. We want to be able to walk outside without fear of violence. And we want our companie to support spousal benefits for our spouses.
If Chik-Fil-A had donated to the NRA, any association that assists heterosexual couples with counseling, or any other conservative group which remains neutral on the marriage equality issue, then I wouldn't have a problem with them. I myself am a firm supporter of the NRA. However, I am not a supporter of hate groups whose only intent is to pread lies about people.
As far as following the teachings of Christ, Cathy is not doing that. Nowhere in any of the books, in the Bible or left out (by MEN, by the way) is Jesus quoted as saying homosexuality is wrong. The New Testament scriptures against homosexuality are all from Paul, a reformed Jewish rabbi who still followed the old laws. Therefore the only "Word of God" I will follow is the word of God himself: Jesus. I don't label myself as Christian because, well, I don't follow the religious dogma that Christianity seems to be plagued with. I follow the teachngs of Jesus while honoring everything He made, including my fellow man and nature. I don't worship in a building, I worship at the alter God made.

To those who say that God has no stance.. WRONG.. God has stated over and over marriage is between ONE man and ONE woman ..
And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Really can it be made more plain than that?
For those of you who went to the Nashua CHick-Fil-A in support of their stance, you were swindled by the local manager who could have used this to show support for family values and opposition to perversion but instead is either twisted himself or simply caved in.
For those of you who use scripture ( love thy neighbor as thyself for example Devian ..apt name )
It is not love to let someone go to hell thinking they are going to heaven, it is not love to allow someone to continually pervert themselves without telling them the truth of their perversion.. telling a gay that they are living in a perverted lifestyle IS love, it is concern and care.. supporting it is merely hate disguised as social reform

I understand scientific theory, I understand that scientists have been leaving the evolution theory on droves because it doesn't stand up to scientific FACT, I understand that a great many secular and even atheistic scientists have the same disdain for the theory as they do for creationism.. calling evolution a fairy tale for adults.. yes I do indeed understand.. I understand that there has been no known case of proven evolution either macro or micro within any species, I understand that all such thought of proofs have been shown scientifically false . I understand that there has been no reliable dating method beyond 7,000 years and any speculation on anything presumed older is purely that speculation..as to earth day, earth day is the worship of earth, the goddess earth, it is pagan in nature and intent.. meant to further pervert the minds of the young..it does it's job..

And as for "fairy tale for adults" if there are "many" show me three quotes. Cite them. Prove it. Earth Day is not "worship" of the earth -- it is a day that calls for respect of the conservation of its resources, rather than persistence in the notion that it is exhaustible and the big daddy in the sky will keep renewing it no matter how we use it. As for lack of proof, there is as much proof as for many other scientific facts for which it is difficult or immoral to design an experimental framework -- see http://www.kcfs.org/KsSciSt1999-2001/Fliers_articles/evolution_proof.pdf

David, a part of me is hoping you're just a net troll and not actually that ignorant. I don't know where you get your information from. Evolution is a very well understood and even an observable process (in animals with very short lifespans; like bugs). When people refer to the 'theory' of evolution, they're not referring to whether or not evolution exists, because we know that it does, they're referring to whether man and animals as we think of them were created by God in a flash, or if they evolved from simpler lifeforms. Every Christian I know believes that we evolved from simpler lifeforms, and that this is part of God's plan- they don't believe God is a magician; they believe he's a scientist. Science is not an attack on your religion. This will help: http://tinyurl.com/cfq35tn
Scientist are not leaving the idea of evolution in droves. That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard from a fundy in a while. Also, there are TONS of dating methods that go way, waaaaay beyond 7,000 years. Here are some you can read about so you can better understand how they work: http://tinyurl.com/d6as6nr
If you want to avoid looking like a fool, please do research before making such ignorant and outrageous claims, otherwise provide references (which by the sound of it won't help your case). The worst thing fundies do is rely on verbally exchanged information rather than researching things themselves. And PLEASE tell me you're not the same David Campbell running for the State House.

This whole scene based on Chick-Fil-A, and their opinion about not agreeing on same sex marriage is soliciting more hypocrites and uneducated people, than most political debates. First off stop confusing Christians with God or Jesus Christ. The whole Christianity is a human concept of man-made religion and second Jesus never said Christianity. It evolved that way through the churches, not God! Now, just so you know it is okay to freely not agree on everyone's choices, so if a company or person says "I do not follow the bible or says I do not agree with same sex marriage" fine, and that is perfectly within their rights. Its when you start a protest or a war, which to me is all the same, becomes EFFING STUPID, because it shows how narrow minded most of you are! Get over the fact that no matter who or what you are, everyone is entitled to freely express themselves without being persecuted, unless of course you live in Afghanistan. Why don't we simply take government out of marriage totally? If a person isn't part of an organized religion, anyone from a ship's captain, to a good friend could name them a married couple and, to form the legal bond, a document could be filed at the County Registrar's office just like a deed is registered.
No more tax differences between married and single, no more worrying about who is marrying whom, no more questions on a form to check, no more governmental interference at all. From a legal point of view, it'll just be a business deal.
Probably too much to ask, though, that everyone keep their gay/anti-gay, Christian/anti-Christian etc feelings and rants to themselves!

The issue is about a corporation that uses it's profits to support hate groups. It really doesn't have anything to do with you.
And the definition of "marriage" has changed quite a bit over the years, so saying "what it's always been" doesn't make sense. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_civil_marriage_in_the_United_States

PEOPLE,
Listen, Dan Cathy DID NOT state that he "hates gays and the gay community!." All he said is that he supports the biblical definition of a traditional marriage between a man and a woman, which, is and always be the NORMAL marriage. Being "gay" IS a sin. The Bible CLEARLY states that. All Cathy did is stand behind his beliefs with a bold statement. That being said, EVERYONE OF US WAS BORN A SINNER. You ARE NOT born gay. The environment you grow up in, which, in America these days has made people.... "soft," for lack of a better word, has created a huge community of gay people. Heterosexual people are SINNERS TOO! By filling our lives with the Word of the Lord and doing our best to abide by him is all we can do. During the downfall of the Roman Empire, there was a huge increase of gays. It is a SIN. We ALL SIN. This is the fall of the American Empire (unfortunately, but nothing is forever, EXCEPT for LIFE IN HEAVEN), and now you see a great many more gays. You can change your gay outlook. It can be changed. I don't despise gays at all. I accept everyone for who they are, because WE ALL ARE SINNERS and we all are equal in the eyes of God. I just wish there wasn't such a HUGE stance on either side, CAUSING hatred. We must show each other love, and try our best to work together to help our country be the best it can be, economically, politically, spiritually, etc. Please understand that I am a 22 year old, heterosexual college student, with a great outlook on life. LOVE.

he supports hate groups - he gives money he earns from you eating at his stores to hate - tell lies about our brothers and sisters - does your god accept this kind of behavior? I don't remember any teachings I read as a child that we must lobby to keep Congress from admonishing other countries for their policy on Killing Gays...
He can say anything he likes, he can believe it in his heart, he can even imagine a religion that uses money to hurt not help - but he can't have my money to spread hate.

One who is full of ?????? Tell me..... where in the bible says that being gay is a sin... if you're referring to the Leviticus part where it mentions that a man should not lay with another man, then you need to follow every single law that the Leviticus talks about. Including not eating shellfish, stone your kids to death if they answer back etc... Let's be fair and follow every single "law" to the teeth. I think that being unfair should also be considered a sin.
If we talk about people who support Chic-Fil-A, you need to really see that most of them are talking about hate, even mentioning that word, "We like you because you HATE the gays"... now tell me... Isn't that hate? In what world are you living? or should I ask... In what part of the bible belt are you living?

Cathy is of corse entitled to his views and to donate money that is his, But the effect on a franchise owner could be to put them out of business,
His views are almost as arrogant as his actions.
But he has no right to effect franchise owners this way (even if some may well be making money in the short term) anymore than to force his own religion on the lives of others.
