Renovated Factory Earns 5 Star Energy Rating

The former shoe factory puts Nashua on the map as a model for efficiency.

A renovated millyard shoe factory has been recognized for its transformation into residential living space with a top energy rating.

Palm Square Residences, a 140-unit apartment complex located in the historic former home of the Moody, Estabrook & Anderson Shoe Company building, was recently recognized for achieving Energy Star's 5 Star Energy Efficiency Rating.

"We are very pleased to receive this rating as it recognizes our strong commitment to energy efficiency," said Mario Plante, President of MDP Development LLC and developer of the Palm Square Residences. "The investments made at Palm Square are not only good for the environment and energy conservation, but have also helped tenants save on their energy costs."

Energy Star is a program of the Environmental Protection Agency and certifies facilities that meet strict energy performance standards that allow them to conserve energy, cost less to operate, and emit fewer green house gas emissions. The building qualified for the 5 Star Rating by using energy efficient options in almost every aspect of the building's renovation. The Palm Square Residences opened in the fall of 2008 and is located in the heart of Nashua's downtown area. The facility features a 10,000-square-foot covered atrium and an onsite restaurant.

During the renovation, Public Service of New Hampshire worked with MDP Development to incorporate energy efficient appliances, light fixtures, windows, and insulation into the project, which made the building eligible for the Energy Star rating. "Investing in energy efficiency is a smart way for any business to lower operating costs," said Phil Boivin, PSNH Account Executive. "PSNH has a variety of resources available to help businesses looking to invest in energy efficiency and is ready to work with them and tailor a solution to their needs."
