What Does Sale of Shaw's Market Mean in Nashua?
Owners say no immediate changes for two Nashua markets.
The new owners of local Star Market and Shaw's supermarkets say no immediate changes are planned for the stores.
There are two Shaw's stores in Nashua, at 300 Main St. and 213 DW Highway.
According to the Boston Globe, there are 155 Shaw's and 14 Star Markets with 17,000 employees. In November the troubled company announced it was cutting 700 jobs.
The new owners, an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management, bought the stores as part of a bigger $3.3 billion deal. Cerberus also controls the locally based Steward Health Care System network of community hospitals.
The Boston Herald says Albertson's will take over all the New England Shaw's and Star Markets. Albertson's is a well-known supermarket brand name in the West and parts of the northern Midwest. The Herald also reports that the deal has industry analysts guessing that some of the Shaw’s and Star Markets could be sold off again to others after the deal is done.
Do you shop at Shaw's or Star? Does it matter to you who owns the company?

I shopped at Shaw's once and vowed I would never shop there again. Besides the hassle of having to have a "card" to receive "discounts", the prices are outrageous. It's cheaper to shop at market basket even with the cost of gas.

You really don't need the card to get the discounts. Just tell them you have a card but it is at home. They then run a card for you....

I loved Albertsons when I lived in Washington, so I think it will be an improvement if they do change anything.

Hopefully the prices will come down. I couldn't afford to do "weekly" shopping there. And unfortunately a lot of people that shop there can't really afford it, they live there and have on transportation to go elsewhere.

In my experience, Market Basket does have lower prices that Shaws...

Seamus, wouldn't that be lying? It doesn't matter to the public, who owns the "Store", as long as the prices are, at least comparable. Not gouging those who can afford it least.

I shop Market Basket as much as possible, I find I save a lot more. My friend went in and just compared prices on her lists and found she would save $38 by going to Market Basket rather than Shaw's, which is much closer to us.
