VIDEO: Smith Denies Being a ‘Zombie’

Republican gubernatorial candidate calls rival Jackie Cilley's "pledge zombie" ad "cute" but stands by anti-tax pledge.

Republican gubernatorial candidate made a stop in Concord on Aug. 17, talking to seniors at about his campaign.

After the event, Concord NH Patch asked him about new “Pledge Zombies” campaign ad that is turning heads – and inspiring guffaws – across the state.

“I don’t consider myself a zombie even though I did take ‘The Pledge,’” he said.

Smith said that New Hampshire is better off without a broad-based sales or income tax. He noted that the state is often the last one to plunge into recession and the first state to come out recessions due to the lack of a broad-based tax.

The wit of the ad, however, was not lost on Smith.

“While I think it was a good, humorous cute attempt at poking fun at the pledge, you won’t be seeing me walking around like a zombie any time soon,” he said. “Maybe after the election I’ll do my best impression of one.”
