We've been amazed at the diversity of avian life in just our own neighborhood! Our feeders routinely draw small birds of all sorts, jays, mourning doves, and many different species of woodpeckers (including, recently, a pair of big Northern Flickers).
And because we keep the mourning doves (and chipmunks and squirrels) well fed, we've also acquired over the years a family of Red-Tailed Hawks. They are routinely seen and heard cruising in the sky over our hilltop, but even more strikingly, come to drink at our bird baths and sit on our deck rails. We even got to see mom training her fledgling to hunt rodents at our planting beds. Turkey vultures cruise the hill as well.
Farther afield but still within a mile or two, one can find Pileated Woodpeckers in the nearby woods, Great Blue Herons at the Nashua River (and a few times, at our goldfish pond!) as well as osprey and swans on the river plus the wild turkeys in any of the nearby fields.
Oh, and three noisy parrots in our house! ;-)
It's a great place to like birds!
