NEC Poll: Voters Want Congress, NH to Act on Gun Violence Prevention

Granite State Progress Statement on New Hampshire voters overwhelmingly supporting background checks, assault weapons ban

Henniker, NH -- A new poll released by New England College confirms that New Hampshire voters overwhelming support stronger gun violence prevention measures.

By a nearly 3-to-1 margin, Granite Staters support a ban on assault weapons in New Hampshire (72%-24%) and by a nearly 8-to-1 margin support a national proposal to require a criminal background check for every gun sale (88%-10%). Both men (64% to 34%) and women (80% to 16%) strongly support the mass murder prevention initiative – otherwise known as the assault weapons ban. The poll reports a margin of error of 3.82%.

“The horrific tragedy that we saw in Connecticut has increased the public call for urgent action to prevent more gun violence,” said Granite State Progress executive director Zandra Rice Hawkins. “This poll demonstrates that the people of New Hampshire share the same sense of outrage that communities across the country have expressed in recent weeks. This should serve as notice to both the State House in Concord and our elected representatives in Washington that Granite Staters are serious about preventing gun violence. The consensus that the poll shows cuts across party, region, and gender.”

Because legal gun owners didn't do their duty and secure their weapons, or sold them to criminals without doing a background check.

Studies conducted at both the local and national level indicate the overwhelming majority of murders are committed by people with previous criminal records. Even a significant percentage of homicide victims themselves have criminal records.

If only Lincoln had a gun with him
Coulda shot Booth between the eyes,
Blown the smoke away from the rim,
Said a one-liner and bowed,
A standing ovation from the crowd,
Just think how freakin cool that woulda been ooh…

If only Gandhi had a Smith & Wesson
Said “Screw passive resistance”
And taught his enemies a real lesson,
Could’ve inspired fear and dread,
And his assassins woulda fled
Just think of all the things that could be undone
If only everyone had a gun

If John Lennon had a derringer, think what coulda been,
Coulda shot Chapman in the torso
And waited for gangrene to set in,
And his advice to all his fans,
Would be, “Give a piece a chance”,
Imagine all the people living as one,
If only everyone had a gun

I’m talking everyone form the smallest child
To the oldest and most senile
Now that’s a recipe for a safer nation
Jesse James and Wild Bill
Would be pretty old, but living still,
If they’d just heeded the NRA’s recommendation

All the problems of the world can be solved by a gun,
If your gun ain’t solved no problems,
Boy you just need a bigger one,
Guns can help an awful lot,
Just the wrong people keep getting shot,
But they’re incredibly safe and not to mention fun ooh,

Just think if Jesus Christ had had a gun
Coulda shot the Pharisees till they believed
He was God’s only son,
No need for him to have died,
If God had a gun on his right hand side,
It’s the only saviour the NRA wants,
Glory be to guns

Does not taking away the "big stick" from those who "walk softly" limit their ability to "go far" or was Teddy just blowing smoke? And what happens when those who "walk softly" no longer carry a "big stick"; but, those who "walk violently" are the only ones carrying a "big stick"?

Why require the use of seat belts if wearing a seat belt does not always save a life in an accident? Why prohibit people from carrying guns onto planes if it doesn't eliminate all risk of hijacking? Why prohibit providing assistance to terrorists if it doesn't stop all terrorist acts? Why require tests for the issuance of driver's licenses if it doesn't stop all accidents?

We require these regulations because they address problems that need to be addressed and because if these regulations can save some lives, they are steps worth taking. So it should be with the gun debate.

No proposal, or set of proposals, will ever stop all gun crime. But the 1978 proposals could have stopped some illegal sales of guns by renegade dealers. And things like forced waiting periods for gun purchases, requiring background checks for firearms buyers at gun shows and a ban on assault weapons would certainly save some lives.

Maybe it is thousands of lives over time; maybe it is hundreds. But isn't every life saved worth it? Would it not have been worth it if even some of the lives lost at Sandy Hook could have been saved because the shooter did not have an assault weapon?

Gun control is not the total answer to the problem of mass shootings, but it plainly needs to be part of any meaningful response. Let's hope that this time the debate on gun control will be a more sensible one.

About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store, when I was thirteen

Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen
So l asked if I could have one someday when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up and I didn't understand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a might slow
Loads a might slow and soon I found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out
So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

Well I get into a card game in a company town
Caught a miner cheating I shot the dog down
Shot the dog down, watched the man fall
Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw
The trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded, not guilty I said
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand
