Say No to Thanksgiving Day Shopping

I heard that some retailers are thinking of opening on Thanksgiving at 8 p.m. to give people a jump on their Christmas shopping.

Really?

Each Thanksgiving my wife, the kids and I head to my in-laws house which is south of Boston.  We usually head home between 8 and 9 p.m., and the highway goes past some large stores in Braintree.  There are people camping out at the stores waiting for the doors to open at midnight.  I guess that waiting outside in the cold for four hours to save $50 on something is worth it to some people...

While I do not believe the government should control when stores can be open, I encourage everyone to "just say no" to shopping on Thanksgiving.  If few people show up this year, the retailers won't be open next Thanksgiving....

I don't want to control anyone's life. As stated, I do not want the government to control when stores are open, but I'd rather see people be home with their families and not shopping or working. You can do whatever you want.

I ran a movie theater for about ten year, and we were open 365 a year. I used to grumble about having to work the Holidays, till it hit me who my customers were. I lived near Ft Lewis/McChord in Washington State and a lot of the people coming in were military stationed far, far away from their families. Young men and women who gave up more than people realize, even in times of peace. Also lot of the clients were seniors, with no family left and many, many single/lonely individuals obviously just looking for something to take up some time.
I learned to look forward to working the holidays, even though I was working because the company wanted every last penny out of people, that I was there to make those who were alone, not feel so lonely anymore.

Im a transplant, Ive only lived in Nashua for a little over five years. My husbands family celebrates Thanksgiving on Friday, but Im always blue on Thursday. Mainly because I know exactly what the rest of my family is doing and Im not there with them. So if I go shopping, or go see a movie, yes... it may be to get a good deal, but it will also be to take my mind off of the fact that Im so very far away from the family I left behind.

So I wont be boycotting Thanksgiving Day shopping, if I go out, I will be thanking those who serve me and others who benefit, get something more out of them being open than just an awesome deal.

I can understand movies and restaurants as that is something social that one does with others. I don't see the same value in getting that 32"LED tv 8 hours earlier....

I think most of those workers would prefer to have the day off. I won't be shopping.
