Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. If it weren't for Abe, we'd still have a huge population of disenfranchised slaves. So don't tell me Democrats are on the forefront off "expanding opportunity for the once disenfranchised." The only thing the Democrats do for the disenfranchised is promise them expanded entitlements in exchange for their vote on election day.

When you have to reach way back to Abraham Lincoln to prove that the Republican Party is not racist today, you tend, against your own assertion, to reinforce the point that it is.

I can give an example much more current than 1864: We Democratic Party voters nominated an African American as our presidential candidate - twice. That's not a quid pro quo arrangement of benefits for votes. It is an important moral step forward, both materially and symbolically. Democrats sent National Guard troops into Alabama to enforce desegregation fifty years ago. That wasn't a bribe to minorities. Democrats elected the first ever Muslim into Congress. That's not a bribe.

Republicans have never nominated a minority for president, excepting Mitt Romney, who is basically a W.A.S.P. with a Mormon twist. Hardly adventuresome there.

We Democrats will nominate a woman for our presidential candidate before the Republican Party will nominate a woman, and we will garner all the excitement and enthusiasm for it first. Eat our dust.

I've voted for woman and for people with a many different genetic backgrounds. But never BECAUSE of it, I vote for the person I think is best. There seems to be a good sized group of people who apply this sort of electorate Affirmative Action. I wonder how their numbers weigh compared to the racists/sexist etc and how it balances.

I think that independent of policy and politics that she showed the kind of work ethic and commitment that earn respect form people in both parties. She's going to be a powerhouse in 2016 unless something drastic changes.

If the Old Boy network can get one more win I think it would be with Jeb Bush, but I don't like his odds against Hillary. I think the Democrats are more afraid of center-right candidate with a platform like the one Geraldo is using in Jersey. I doubt a RINO candidate could survive the primary though, not yet.

Franklin Roosevelt barred discrimination against African Americans for hiring and promotions in government jobs. Harry Truman opened up the armed services. JFK sent troops into Alabama and Mississippi to enforce desegregation. All along it was the Democratic Party doing the most to make these advances. Republicans resisted, citing states' rights.

Richard Nixon began to harvest southern white resentment on civil rights with what became known as the "Southern Strategy." It's still alive today. It is so notorious that former RNC chairman, Ken Mehlman, went before the NAACP and apologized for it in 2005.

Hillary's competency for the job of president is known. She's up to snuff.

Given the choice between two candidates, both presumably qualified for the job, then it's perfectly reasonable to vote for the woman because it's about time we had a woman president.

You do realize that they were firsts in each of their positions....not because of their color or gender but because they were the most qualified. I think of this because Gov Patrick appointment last week of an interim Senator, Gov Patrick said "race and gender definately played a role in his decision process".

Notice your cutoff dates, Salem Voter. Republicans stopped advocating for minority civil rights right around the 1960 mark. Shortly thereafter, Richard Nixon begins to deploy the Republican Party's notorious "southern strategy" - the one former RNC chief Ken Mehlman apologized to the NAACP for.

African Americans begin voting Democratic right around the same time. Not because they were getting all kinds of free goodies, but because their staunchest allies in the civil rights struggle were Democrats. Also, at the same time, the Republican Party begins to slide farther rightward, becoming less liberal and shedding the northeastern "Rockefeller Republicans" while becoming more conservative and swelling with southern and western "states' rights" libertarian/conservatives. Ideology begins to matter more.

Back to the African American experience: What is the key ideological difference between liberals (Democrats) and conservatives (Republicans)? Isn't it the dispute over the role of the state? How do you think African Americans think they would have fared if the role of the federal government in desegregation had been suppressed in favor of local control of civil rights?

African Americans identify with liberals because liberal ideology believes in the occasional intervention of the national government, which is exactly what African Americans needed to advance their own civil rights. African Americans vote Democratic because they're liberal.

Furthermore, African Americans don't vote Republican because of the changes happening in the Republican Party. Barry Goldwater was the party's nominee in 1964. He campaigned against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He was for nonintervention in the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, and cited "states' rights."

Over the next decade and a half, the GOP came to be, more and more, a party of "Goldwater Republicans." Ronald Reagan called himself one. Reagan launched his general election campaign by citing his support for states' rights at Neshoba County Fair in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where three young civil rights workers were murdered in 1964, the most notorious crime of the civil rights era.

Exploiting southern white resentment against federal civil rights interventions in the deep south got Republicans lots of votes. It brought them new converts. Strom Thurmond was an early switch. He changed from Democrat to Republican because he thought the Democrats were becoming too liberal with regard to desegregation, and he found more sympathy in the Republican Party which was eager for the votes of disgruntled southern whites.

So, not only do African Americans think that Democrats are more sympathetic to their interests, but so do (did) many former Democrats who became Republicans for the exact same reason - Strom Thurmond. Kehn Mehlman and the NAACP. If Democrats are so delusional about racism in the GOP, then why did Mehlman apologize?
