A New Londoner April 24, 2014 at 09:09 am
Miss Krys-Sadly there is little to no more actual 'news' or 'journalists' on The Patch. Most ofRead More it's just personal blogs on display. Nothing more than PIDIOTS shooting off their mouths under many different guises. You're better served by sniffing out a real news source as most of the rest of us have already done. This place is just for kicks and giggles. Especially Bossy here, s/he is a real trip.
Alex Cross April 24, 2014 at 09:37 am
Another avoidable tragedy :-(
Miss Krys April 24, 2014 at 09:37 am
I see that. I've come to notice that The Patch is pretty much BS news. As I am new to the area, IRead More really thought it was something I would be able to use. But the more I view it, the more I realize how close minded and idiotic people really are. These people are all "anti-pitbulls" and "anti" everything. I thought The Patch would have been a breath of fresh air but all it has been is depressing stories and a bunch of negativity. As if there isn't enough of that on TV. Thank you A New Londoner for clarifying that I should look beyond The Patch.
Last night the Board of Aldermen inked up their proverbial rubber stamp and, in an 8:7 vote, put a "VOID" mark on the petitions that they were provided with.
Paul Shea April 23, 2014 at 01:30 pm
Yes, Brenda, "site alternatives" does include Greeley Park, and about 7 other locations asRead More I understand it. I have added a note that this includes Greeley for clarity.
Robert Holt April 23, 2014 at 04:20 pm
Was there a Statement of Work on this study? Would like to find out a little more on the specifics.Read More It has a price tag so I'm assuming it has some details behind it...
Mike black April 23, 2014 at 10:04 pm
How many would have signed the Facebook petition if it was in favor of building at Sargent ave, orRead More Robey park, or Lincoln park ? The same. And the aldermen would have voted the same. There is a small group of lobbyists that have this ridiculous obsession with Greeley park. Most of the public just wants it built and couldn't care less where.

Harriet Laurin April 24, 2014 at 08:16 am
@tribble "all Harriet is proving is that media DOES report other dog attacks, when and if theyRead More happen. " It's not "if they happen" - they do happen. However, the media frequently does NOT report other breed incidents - that has also been proven in the past - unless they are catastrophic in nature. Not everything gets reported.

Can we kill M Vick and the puppy doe guy
Harriet Laurin April 24, 2014 at 08:41 am
#John - I did see the stats. I also know that such studies often are flawed, with dogs beingRead More misidentified, etc. - sometimes even by professionals. I will never advocate for a breed ban, because that is an ineffective policy that punishes an entire classification based on the actions/incidents associated with a relative few in terms of the entire population. I will always advocate for increased education of owners, what it means to be a responsible owner - including providing the dog with proper training, exercise, nutrition, veterinary care, socialization, licensing, microchipping, adherence to leash laws, etc. - and that should be for EVERY dog owner. And for the record, both of my dogs are "fixed" so they will never add to the pet overpopulation problem. Both went to obedience school, and the PB earned the AKC CGC on her first try. She was also the ONLY dog in the class who passed. While prepping her for that test, she went to a crowded mall where a plate of food was dropped on the floor in front of her. Most dogs would have jumped on the opportunity to scarf up what was on that plate; not her. She looked to me for direction, which was "leave it" - and that's exactly what she did. While training towards becoming a certified service dog, she flew a round-trip flight 5.5 hours each way, in coach. A TSA agent happened to be seated two rows behind us, and when he saw my PB at my feet, he made some comments to another passenger that weren't very nice about my dog, based solely on her breed. He didn't know it, but that passenger he was talking to knew me and she didn't tell him. However, by the end of the flight, he reversed his position and told her that he would never have believed it if he hadn't seen it for his own eyes - but he's flown many, many flights and had never seen a more well-behaved dog and watching her work - which included staying quiet the entire flight, escorting me down the length of the aisle to the lavatory and back, without batting an eye at any of the many other passengers on the plane - changed his previously negative view on PBs. Unlike some PB-proponents who deny a PB could attack, I admit they can - as can any other dog. It often comes down to responsible ownership and management of the dog, rather than the actual breed.

What I think is really scary and a public health threat is the violence PEOPLE do to pit bulls. WeRead More kill millions of them every year. They are tortured in fighting rings, look at what Vick did. Humans are a very dangerous breed. THere should be laws or something to protect the public--and animals--- from people.
tribble April 23, 2014 at 12:56 pm
#Kim, all the more reason for restrictions, such as spaying and neutering. Less animals to be hurtRead More in fighting pits or put in the pound, only to be put down.

@Danielle, the audible only works good on your smartphone or an MP3 player. You can use it at theRead More gym when reading may not be as convenient (try rowing while reading -- listening works). Or go for a walk outdoors while listening to a book... just be careful crossing streets. I believe there are pronunciations issues with the text-to-speech as it tries to simulate speech instead of being an actual recording like the audio books. Each has it's advantages.
Christine Hunnefeld April 23, 2014 at 07:30 pm
@Danielle, thank you for pointing out that ebooks are available from the library. Here is the linkRead More to the digital media catalog for libraries in the Minuteman Library Network http://digital.minlib.net They have bestsellers, classics, how-to, etc. As well as downloadable audiobooks which you can listen to on your phone, mp3 player, etc.
Tim H April 23, 2014 at 10:48 pm
OverDrive Media Console (http://omc.overdrive.com/) is an app you can install on most popularRead More devices that will assist you with downloading eBooks and audiobooks from your library. I happen to be part of the Minuteman Library Network, so I know it works there. I'm sure other libraries outside the network work with OverDrive as well. Thanks @Danielle for starting this post!

Mad as hell... April 22, 2014 at 11:28 pm
Savecritters...I appreciate your concern but like I said you may want to make sure your homeownersRead More insurance will cover that dog. When you're on the receiving end of a pit bull dog's attack it's hard to fathom the logic in owning one.
Savecritters....you lost the argument as soon as you wrote "...owned by countless movieRead More stars..." What the hell does that prove?
tribble April 23, 2014 at 06:53 am
Yeah, Miley Cyrus' pit bull killed her little doggie last fall. The other dog that just died...it'sRead More being covered up how it died. That's why all the articles that mention coyote say "allegedly".

Boss Hogg and Anthony. Thank you both. Seeing where it's coming from I'll take that as a compliment.

What?
Penquin April 21, 2014 at 11:39 am
Wrong blog Igor, but I do agree with your opinions on this particular blog.
Hookerman April 23, 2014 at 11:41 am
For the record, Magic Johnson contracted HIV (not AIDS) through sex with a reported 10,000 differentRead More women. Do you actually believe you can only contract HIV though gay sex??? Christie, your comments are so ridiculously ignorant, that I’m almost willing to believe that you are putting us all on. I almost believe that there’s some poster who created this character of an extremely ignorant bible-thumping woman, and he is right now having a great laugh at how he’s put one over on us all. If that’s the case, then my hat’s off to you!
christie nicolle April 23, 2014 at 11:48 am
wait Hookerman - out of those 10,000 chicks, 1 of them slept with a homosexual -- frankly I heard heRead More was on the 'low down' but either way, his promiscuity got him. So my point is Salient! The bible warns that the wages of sin is death -- what more do you want? HAPPY EASTER!
ChristieD April 23, 2014 at 06:50 pm
Hookerman; thank you very much for differentiating me from ChristieN. I very much appreciate that.Read More Let me remind you, however, ChristieN's status as a "Christian" has endowed her knowledge on every possible situation where something is unknown. God must speak to her in some special way in those voices that she hears in her head (.....ChristieN; this is god, and I want you to spread the gospel of good news that Magic Johnson had gay sex and is going to hell........and by the way, judgment is a sin; WAIT, cut that one out....erase erase erase)
Mike black April 20, 2014 at 08:27 pm
Shouldn't the 'goal' be the installation of the playground at your preferred site, not some FacebookRead More petition that means nothing to alderman that have already made their decision ?
Paul Shea April 20, 2014 at 08:40 pm
The goal of this petition is to give Aldermen who may be on the fence a greater degree of confidenceRead More that the public supports this great idea, as they go into acting and voting in regard to the issue. Yes, ultimately, the goal is to have a universally accessible playground at Greeley Park.
Rusty April 23, 2014 at 07:18 am
minedispo... You are absolutely correct, as a leader you are elected to make a decision and live andRead More die by it. You do not sneak out the back door when the vote comes up!
John Luger April 23, 2014 at 11:50 pm
If Obama care is so great for everyone why don't our elected officials have it for THEIR coverage?
Super Fun Size April 24, 2014 at 07:16 am
John, you can't "get" ObamaCare. Elected officials do not need the benefit of Health CareRead More Exchanges for the same reason the overwhelming majority of Americans don't need the benefits of Health Care Exchanges, we/they already have insurance.

Anna Bucciarelli April 20, 2014 at 08:15 am
Definitely will add these to my long, long list of "to reads". Maybe I'll live longRead More enough to get to them all. Just finished an oldie but goodie ... but you know? The stories only stay with me for a while, I read so much that I forget what I've already read and after the first few pages, I get into it again and often continue since I liked it the first time around. There will never be enough hours in any day to read all I want to and thank goodness and God for Goodreads and, of course, my library and you, Danielle, for adding to my lists. Was offered a Kindle but know what? I really prefer to hold that book in my lap to read, plus I prefer to use my library ... it's FREE, for goodness sake, why would I pay to read anything but a newspaper? And, even that can be gotten at the library. If nothing else, I just love the smell of a library! (Sorry for my longwinded-ness ... just love, love books.)
Mamie Huggins April 20, 2014 at 08:37 am
Hey Anna - I'm a book lover too and use the library on occasion. But it's not FREE as you say, it'sRead More paid for by us taxpayers. Also, when I buy a book, especially by an unknown and/or local author, I'm helping that person to keep writing.
Anna Bucciarelli April 20, 2014 at 05:48 pm
Of course you're right Mamie but if I don't have to part with an additional penny from my pocket IRead More feel it's a treat. And you're right too about keeping authors writing I especially like books by new, first-time novelists who often surprise me with the wonder of their words.
