NH Near Top in 'Best State' Poll

Is "Live Free or Die" New Hampshire the best place to live?

New Hampshire residents really like where they live. When asked by Gallup to rate their state, 67 percent of Granite Staters said their state is "the best or one of the best" places to live.

Only six states had a higher rate: Montana (77 percent), Alaska (77), Utah (70), Wyoming (69), Texas (68) and Hawaii (68).

It is the first time Gallup has measured this criteria. It did so from June to December of 2013, and interviewed 600 people in each of the states. Rhode Island residents plunked their state at the bottom of the list, with just 13 percent saying their state was the best or one of the best places to live.

Massachusetts came in at 46 percent, Connecticut at 31 percent, Vermont at 61 percent, and Maine at 57 percent.

Gallup, in its interpretation of the results April 24, said states with high "best state" ratings are likely to have a greater standard of living, a higher state of trust in their government, and "less resentment toward the amount they pay in state taxes."
