Hemingway Announces Run for Governor

He is the first Republican to enter the race.

Republican Andrew Hemingway announced his candidacy for governor of New Hampshire on Thursday night at The Yard in Manchester.

Republican Andrew Hemingway announced Thursday night that he will run for governor in 2014.

Hemingway, who ran Newt Gingrich's New Hampshire campaign in 2012, outlined his plans for health care, education and employment before a crowd of more than 100 people at The Yard in Manchester. He repeatedly hit Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, referring to her over and over again as the "Status Quo Governor" and talking about the damage she has done to the state.

"I am officially declaring my candidacy for governor," Hemingway said. "I am running for governor because I believe that our state motto 'Live Free or Die' is much more than just a catchy marketing slogan, it's much more than just something we can stamp onto license plates, rather it’s a statement of principal. It is woven into the very fabric of our state.

"How far have we drifted from when General John Stark penned those words? Very far. Over the last 10 years we have seen massive expansion of regulations, budgets, taxes. And we all know that when government expands, individual and economic freedom decrease. How did we go from the 'Live Free or Die' state to a state with some of the highest tax rates, some of the lowest test scores and some of the highest insurance premiums in the country? How did this happen? Very simply, we have allowed outside influences to determine our priorities. We have elected governors who have lacked the courage to challenge the status quo."

He urged people not to count him out, no matter what people say.

"You know, David and Goliath is a story we remember because David won," he said.

A WMUR/University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll released Thursday showed that Hassan remains popular in the state, with a 51 favorability rating. It also showed that in a head-to-head matchup, Hassan leads Hemingway 48 percent to 27 percent.

The New Hampshire Democratic Party issued a press release criticizing Hemingway and trying to tie him to the Tea Party and former Republican House Speaker Bill O'Brien.

New Hampshire Democratic Party Communications Director Harrell Kirstein released the following statement on Tea Party Republican Andrew Hemingway's decision to run for Governor.

"As an infamous Tea Party leader, no ideological cause is too far right for Andrew Hemingway," NHDP spokesman Harrell Kirstein said. "He led the Tea Party's efforts to attack worker's rights with so called Right-to-Work bills, block access to basic health services for thousands of Granite State women, and slash education funding while making cigarettes cheaper.

"Hemingway's extreme ideology would take us back to the disastrous agenda of disgraced former Speaker Bill O'Brien. He even endorsed the radical former Speaker's election in order to prevent a 'moderate, conciliatory agenda.' Granite Staters can't afford to have Hemingway in elected office, his radically right-wing agenda is radically wrong for New Hampshire."

Maggie doesn't pay property taxes! Hehe, I love that commercial!

Isn't Hemingway an "Activist"?

Maggie "TAX & SPEND" Hassan doesn't have a clue as to what she is doing. The Budget that she proposed, included 80 million from a Casino that wasn't even approved. How can anyone believe that she knows what she is doing??? The budget that was finally passed and the fact that there was SURPLUS was the DIRECT RESULT of Republican's passing a something that worked. Now we have Good Ole Maggie wanting to spend this SURPLUS (that wouldn't have even existed if her budget passed) on other things versus putting it into the RAINY DAY FUND. How is this being FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE??? She needs to go away and take Jeanne "Barry's Puppet & Parrot" Shaheen with her, Or did you all forget about her Promises of "If you like your Doctor and Health Care Plan you can KEEP THEM". Good Bye and Good Riddance to them BOTH!!!

Is activist a pejorative descriptor? Seems like a pretty qualified candidate. Reform style governors are solving issues all across the country instead of the same old do nothing types that push the stays quo after being elected.
Hon Kevin Avard February 01, 2014 at 02:05 PM
Tom well said. When conservatives run on ideas and solutions they are called extremest by the very people who have no answers. Didn't the the republican house and senate create a surplus? Didn't they try to solve the unfunded liabilities that loom over NH head of the NH pensions? Ask Maggie about NH Bond rating.

"What is so radical to believe in the Constitution and the rule of law." It is very funny to listen to self-appointed constitutional scholars, who know the exact meaning of every word and phrase in the constitution, despite the fact that the founders immediately began arguing the meaning of the constitution before the ink dried on the paper. Hemingway is not ready for prime time, which is why the more exposure he gets in the media, the better his political opposition will do at the polls.

"When conservatives run on ideas and solutions they are called extremest..." Conservative favorite Michael Grimm had a great solution to prevent news reporters from asking uncomfortable questions, throw the guy over a balcony.

Anthony Weiner had a great way of doing things as well NOW didn't he Ray. Or how about Jesse Jackson Jr. Another Prime example of what's wrong with the Democratic Party

Democracts keep drinking the kool aid and you will end up like Jim Jones in Guyana. Your policies can't be taken seriously.
Hon Kevin Avard February 01, 2014 at 05:15 PM
Ray , Hemingway is ready for prime time! so according to you the constitution was written only for the intellectual elites like yourself? we the downtrodden troglodytes have no right to claim any of our civil liberties? you bore me!
Ray Guarino February 01, 2014 at 08:26 PM
"...so according to you the constitution was written only for the intellectual elites like yourself? we the downtrodden troglodytes have no right to claim any of our civil liberties? you bore me!" Mr. pretentious "Honorable" Avard, nice strawman argument. Never did I say that the constitution was written for elites, but you are correct, you and right wing buddies are troglodytes, that's a very good observation. So I'd much rather not have troglodytes telling me what's in the constitution thank you.

Ray, Are you okay with the president (regardless of party affiliation) making law and/or having selective enforcement, thus usurping the power, as defined in the Constitution, of Congress?
Ray Guarino February 02, 2014 at 10:49 AM
Sorry to disappoint you Apljak, Obama did not make his own laws, even though right wing propaganda outlets might have told you he did. Obama has issued the least amount of executives orders than his most recent predecessors. As far as "usurping" the constitution, he has pushed the envelope far less than his predecessors.
Apljak February 02, 2014 at 11:18 AM
Ray, You have been listening to Sonia's propaganda for too long.
jpf2361 February 02, 2014 at 11:48 AM
Ray, I guess you have never heard of ObamaCare.
Apljak February 02, 2014 at 04:19 PM
While every president has the authority as well as the approval of Congress in certain circumstances, (enter into contracts, etc...), there is a limit to the Executive Order. Obama just happens to be pushing the limit, if not ignoring them completely on SOME of his. You probably had no problem with his "absentee" appointees either if you are okay with him usurping Congress' role with some of them. To be specific, are you okay with selective enforcement, i.e. Dream Act. Don't you think he should have went to Congress and worked with them to pass a law which would have death with this issue. I will guess that someday, you will come to rue the day that a Republican does the same thing and you are going to look like a hypocrite.
Ray Guarino February 02, 2014 at 06:29 PM
"I will guess that someday, you will come to rue the day that a Republican does the same thing..." Apljak, seriously? all you have to do is go back to the last Republican president and find that he has already done the same. Go back further to Reagan, he did the same thing. You have no argument Apljak, Obama has not usurped the constitution, except in the narrow minds of right wing extremists.
Apljak February 03, 2014 at 02:24 PM
So your defense is others have done it before, whether it is constitutional or not. That Ray, is a horrible argument. If W did it, he should have been charged for the offense by Congress; same with Ronnie. I assume you can give at least one example...

Hemingway is a joke, just like Newt, his mentor - an embarrassment to our nation.
Apljak February 04, 2014 at 10:18 PM
Ray, This is the risk when your Executive branch arbitrarily enforces some legislation and refuses to enforce other legislation: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/immigration-detention-teen-leaf-pile-deaths-22353625

What a stretch Apljak.
Apljak February 05, 2014 at 09:55 AM
Sorry Super if the facts don't fit your narrative. It is just the latest of this type of tragedy by an illegal that shouldn't be here but is because of the president's choice to not enforce the law as passed by Congress. All hail King Obama!

So you believe that this accident would not have happened if she had been born in America and not brought here when she was 4? Or do you believe that she would have left the country if not given the opportunity to sign up for this Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program? I know you hate the President, but there is plenty of stuff to dislike about him without making crazy arguments like this.
Apljak February 05, 2014 at 11:36 AM
I know that the Left cries daily for "the children" in the attempt to pass ineffective, "feel good" legislation that may even save "only one life", but it will "be worth the one life"...yet you want to turn your head when there is a current, factual event that is the result of his actions. If there were no "Dream Act" or DACA, those two children would not have been killed but this 19 year old. If she had been born here, it is a terrible accident and potentially a crime of a different sort. No, I am not a of the mindset, however, that these deaths were pre-destined and regardless of the who, that they would have been killed. Had she not been here, they wouldn't have been driven over in a pile of leaves.
Super Fun Size February 05, 2014 at 12:43 PM
"If there were no "Dream Act" or DACA, those two children would not have been killed but this 19 year old"? What? That's quite a leap of logic there.
Apljak February 05, 2014 at 01:05 PM
"by", not "but". sorry I know it may be difficult to read for comprehension...where is the leap? Do you believe in pre-destination? If so, now I get the "leap of logic".
Super Fun Size February 05, 2014 at 05:45 PM
She didn't magically appear here by signing up for DACA, she already lived here. Your argument is silly.
Apljak February 05, 2014 at 05:56 PM
And if the monarchy didn't choose selective enforcement of laws, she and many others may not be here anymore. Your blind support of this lawlessness is silly! It is not the worst thing of his presidency, in fact, he could have tried to work with Congress to get legal status as opposed to citizenship. I assume you would have a different stance tonight if they were your children. Mine would be of similar message but a far worse tone and a far louder voice!
