Set in the year 1815 during a revolutionary period in France, Les Mis is a musical about conflict, loss, love, and hope. We follow the story of Jean Valjean who has just been released on parole after spending the last 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread. He breaks parole and changes his identity. Inspector Javert, the police officer who releases him, makes it his mission to track down Valjean and bring him to justice as he believes that criminals cannot be changed. With his new identity, Valjean becomes the mayor of a small town and adopts Cosette, the daughter of Fantine, a poor factory worker who dies of tuberculosis. Valjean becomes involved in the ongoing revolution to fight for freedom and democracy and ultimately makes it his responsibility to ensure that Cosette has a safe and happy future by saving the man she loves.
