Food Pantry in Desperate Need of Donations

The Salvation Army is in need of all sorts of nonperishable items.

The Nashua Salvation Army's food pantry is in desperate need of donations, as the shelves are almost completely bare.

"People in Nashua are very generous and always fill the need when they know it exists. Giving tends to drop off after the holidays, but unfortunately, the need continues," said Jennifer Horn, Salvation Army's director of development and community affairs.

In January alone, she said the Salvation Army served 367 families through the food pantry.

The greatest needs right now are items like peanut butter and jelly, cereal, soup, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables and fruits and other nonperishable items.

In 2013, the Salvation Army served 4,146 cases, representing 10,610 individual people. The vast majority of those people were served through the food pantry.

"The Salvation Army serves some of the most economically vulnerable people in our community – families for whom an unexpected medical bill or a high heating bill can push them right over the edge," Horn said. "We serve everyone who comes to our door without discrimination and rely entirely on the generosity of the community."

People can leave groceries at the Salvation Army building at 1 Montgomery Ave. in Nashua from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
