Alvirne High School Evacuated After Gas Odor Detected

The school has been evacuated until fire officials determine the source of a gas odor.

Hudson Fire crews are on the scene at Alvirne High School for a report of a gas odor.

According to Christine Miller, whose son is an Alvirne student, fire crews were called after several teachers smelled gas.

"My son arrived to all the fire trucks outside and students out beyond the football field and in the soccer field. I was told by a faculty member when I went to drop him off that multiple teachers smelled gas but the fire department could not, so they evacuated the kids and were trying to find the source," Miller said.

"We sat in the parking lot of the library waiting for the OK to go to class and about 10:45 a.m. buses arrived. The kids were now outside for almost an hour. Some played soccer while others just moved around trying to keep warm. At about 10:55 I finally got the school emergency message from Mr. Beals saying the kids would be dismissed," Miller said.

A fire official said he could not confirm the situation over at the high school until his crews returned.

School Principal Steven Beals said students were dismissed at 11:15 a.m. as a safety precaution.

He said the source of the odor has not yet been determined.

The Hudson Fire Department conducted air quality assessments and the school will be  following up with a commercial environmental company, Beals said.
