Hudson Brush Fire Burns 3 Acres

It's brush fire season, and fire officials are reminding everyone to not be careless.

Just after 1 p.m. Hudson Firefighters responded to a brush fire at 103 Wason Road in Hudson. The fire was sighted by the lookout on Federal Hill tower in Milford.

In total, nine ladders and two other engines responded to the fire from a number of forestry unit to attack the fast-moving fire located on rough terrain. Fire official said due to dry conditions in a heavily wooded area, several alarms were called, summoning crews from Nashua, Windham, Pelham, Derry, Salem, NH Department of Forest and Lands, Litchfield, Tyngsborough, Mass., Dracut, Mass. 

Hudson Fire Engine 4 commanded by Lt. Tim Kearns witnessed a large loom up of smoke as he left Burns Hill Road fire station on his way to the scene. Captain Kevin Grebinar responded to 12 Harwood Road and met up with Lt. Kearns and requested a water supply be set up and more manpower to fight this fire.

The fire was extinguished in about three hours and burned a little more than three acres of brush.

The cause of the fire is listed so far as undetermined, and the Fire Prevention Division will be continuing its investigation this week.

Hudson Fire Officials remind everyone that wildfires are often unintentionally set, but across the U.s. annually burn hundreds of homes and millions of acres of woodlands, affecting thousands of people.

  • In 2011, there were 10,249 wildfires caused by lightning, but 63,877 wildfires caused by human error (as reported to the National Interagency Fire Center).

  • In 2011, more than 8.7 million acres burned due to wildfires in the U.S. More than 5.4 million acres burned due to human-caused wildfires.

  • Common causes of brush fires:

    • unattended debris burning

    • equipment fires such as from lawnmowers, ATVs, power equipment

    • smoking

    • unattended campfires

    • fireworks

  • carelessly discarding fireplace or BBQ ashes
