UPDATE: Search Continues for Man in Merrimack River

NH Fish & Game have taken over the search for the man who jumped from Veteran's Bridge Friday into the Merrimack River.

With a major winter storm on the horizon and a swift-moving current, Fish & Game divers resumed the search today for a Hudson man who disappeared into the murky Merrimack early Friday morning.

Hudson Police Sgt. Mike Niven said this morning that the search, which was called off late Friday, resumed today by the Fish & Game divers who have specialized diving equipment.

He said despite the swift current, divers believe the body of the man would still be in the area.

"I thought that maybe the body had floated downstream, but fire fighters explained that once a body fills up with water it sinks at a rate of two feet per second. With an estimated depth of 20 feet, they're confident that once a boy hits bottom, it would stay within a certain area," Niven said.

He did not know what the plan was yet once the winter storm, expected to bring heavy wet snow and high winds, moved into New Hampshire.

"Hopefully they have success today recovering the body," Niven said.

Niven said that because no body has been found, there is always the possibility that the man could have survived the jump and climbed out of the chilly 48-degree water.

"Although it's highly doubtful, because I believe we would've heard from family members if that were the case, it's still in the realm of possibility," Niven said.
