Sign Of The Times: 'I Have Nothing Better to Do'

Jeff Pattee has a pretty full day planned, thanks to his government-unfunded furlough day:

- Spend 90 minutes in front of Sen. Kelly Ayotte's Nashua office, holding a sign that reads, "I have nothing better to do. Furloughed," while nodding at passing cars.

- Hit the U.S. Post Office to do some snail mail-related business on the way to Congressman Annie Kuster's office, stopping for about 90 minutes to hold the same sign and nod at a new group of motorists as they whiz by.

- Relocate to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen's office and hoist the homemade heartfelt sign for one more go round with public protest, something Pattee says is better than doing nothing.

Today is the first of what could be 11 unpaid furlough days for Pattee, of Nashua, who has worked three years as a civilian systems engineer Hanscom Air Force Base, and for 20 years before that as a contractor.

He said he spoke briefly with a staffer at Ayotte's office, and a couple people hollered "impeach Obama."

"I don't blame the president; i blame Congress, for not being able to agree on anything," Pettee said. "My fear is that if they don't fix this sequester, next time it won't be a furlough, it'll be a layoff."
