Slain Ducks Memorialized in Nashua

Service held where Democratic state Rep. David Campbell drove into the ducks.

Libertarian activists and others held a candlelight vigil in Nashua on Sunday memorializing ducks killed by state Rep. David Campbell, D-Nashua, last year outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Keith Carlsen, a political activist attending the New Hampshire Liberty Forum at the hotel, put together the memorial service to offer “in honor of our fallen friends.”

Campbell's car was reportedly driving the wrong way on a one-way before striking the ducks and Carlsen warned attendees to be careful not to be run over by cars attempting to exit the hotel.

About 20 people were in attendance for a short moment of silence, a candlelight vigil, and then, attendees sang "Amazing Grace" and marched from the hotel entrance to the pond.

"I think this is an event that really brings about the idea that where there is a lack of personal responsibility, there's a lot of negative consequences that affect many people," said Garret Ean of Concord. "Not just humans, but our feathered friends, as well."

Another attendee said it reminded him of when he was a child and fed ducks with his grandmother.

"It's very important for everyone to remember to look out for animals," he said.

"Don't drink and drive," another stated.

Campbell pled “no contest” in court and paid a fine after the accident. Even though he had purchased alcohol at the hotel before striking the ducks and leaving the scene, he has not charged with driving while intoxicated.
