No Transgender Policy Needed for Third Grader, District Says

Superintendent Mark Conrad said policies in place addressing bullying and discrimination will do.

A third-grade transgender student will be allowed to wear girls clothing and use the girls bathroom under an agreement made between the district and the child's family, the Union Leader reported yesterday.

Attorney Janson Wu, of Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, a New England advocacy group, represented the family after the child transferred from one school to another within the district last month. Wu said that while this type of case presents a relatively new challenge for districts, he would recommend specific policies in place for transgender students.

As defined by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Center, transgender is "a word that applies to someone who doesn't fit within society's standards of how a woman or a man is supposed to look or act."
