Superintendent: School Lost Track of Child Due to 'Miscommunication'

A second grader went missing from Mt. Pleasant Elementary School for over an hour on Tuesday morning.

Nashua School Superintendent Mark Conrad said a "miscommunication" led to Mt. Pleasant Elementary School officials losing track of a second grader who went missing on Tuesday morning.

"We did have a student missing for a period of time," Conrad said. "When school staff realized he was missing they searched the building and the immediate neighborhood. When they didn't find him they contacted police and his parent and began the search process."

He said the school district's Plant Operations Department reviewed footage from exterior video cameras showing that the child had left the building.

Conrad said ultimately the child was found "safe and sound" by a relative at nearby Greeley Park.

"It was all hands on deck to search for him," he said. "Thankfully he was found safely."

Conrad said at this point school officials don't know why the child left the building.

"There was some miscommunication about where he was in the building," he said. "Obviously this will be an opportunity to review our student safety protocols in the school so we don't have a miscommunication in the future for this to occur."

Conrad said the boy did not return to school on Tuesday and is back at home.

The superintendent thanked Nashua Police for their quick response, saying "it's always comforting knowing we have the Nashua Police available to us."
