Does Poll Spell Trouble for Kuster, Shea-Porter?

Reps Kuster and Shea-Porter's favorability ratings still in the basement in latest UNH poll.

Net favorability ratings for U.S. Reps. Carol Shea-Porter and Ann Kuster, Democrats from the 1st and 2nd Districts, respectively, are at –1 percent in the latest poll from the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. The findings are fueling a new wave of questioning whether the two are vulnerable in the mid-term elections – much to the delight of Republican State Committee Chairwoman Jennifer Horn. The WMUR Granite State Poll found much higher public opinion of U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat up for re-election in 2014, and U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, a Republican who is not up for re-election until 2016. The UNH release Wednesday was titled, "Shaheen and Ayotte Remain Popular." The Ayotte numbers are in some contrast to the recent …

Republicans Targeting NH in 2014

Democratic U.S. Reps. Annie Kuster and Carol Shea-Porter are both seen as potentially vulnerable.

The emails come almost daily, blasting Democratic Congresswomen Annie Kuster and Carol-Shea Porter and attempting to tie them to everything from sequestration to our nation's economic woes. “Annie Kuster Votes Against Only Plan to Balance Budget,” reads one. “BAD VOTE ALERT: Kuster and Shea-Porter put Washington bureaucracy before American workers,” reads another. No sooner had the dust settled on the 2012 election than the National Republican Congressional Committee started targeting Kuster and Shea-Porter. The 2014 mid-term elections are still a year and a half away, but already, national and local political organizations are beginning to ramp up their operations. “It never really ends anymore,” veteran political scientist Dean Spiliotes…

Kuster, Shea-Porter Sworn In

The lawmakers are part of the first all-female federal delegation in the country.

New Hampshire Congresswomen and Ann McLane Kuster and Carol Shea-Porter were sworn in Thursday in Washington, D.C. The Democrats are now part of the first all-female federal delegation in U.S. history. They join Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. Kuster, of Hopkinton, defeated Republican Charlie Bass. Shea-Porter, of Rochester, defeated Republican Frank Guinta in the November election. Kuster, who was appointed to the House Agriculture Committee, released the following statement: “It’s a great honor to join the U.S. House of Representatives and to serve the hardworking people of New Hampshire’s Second District. We face many challenges as a state and country, but there is so much we can achieve if we’re willing…

'Run, Hillary, Run!'

Members of NH's all-female congressional delegation say they'd like to see Hillary Clinton run for president in 2016.

Half of New Hampshire's all-female congressional delegation said Friday they'd like to see Hillary Clinton run for president in 2016. U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte, U.S. Reps.-Elect Annie Kuster and Carol Shea-Porter and Gov.-Elect Maggie Hassan all appeared Friday at an event for "New Hampshire's First in the Nation Women" at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics in Manchester. New Hampshire is the first state to have an all-female congressional delegation. Near the end of the program, all of the panelists were asked when they expect to see a woman president of the United States, and if they might be that person. "Maybe 2016, if Hillary runs," said Shaheen. Shea-Porter quickly echoed that sentiment, saying "Run, Hillary, …

Bob: I can't tell how serious your question was, but I'll answer it anyway: 1. It is a matter of public record, visible to the poll watchers, whether you are registered as a Democrat, a Republican, or "Undeclared". 2. It is a matter of public record what your name is and it's usually obvious what sex you are. Maria Gonzalez probably votes differently than John Smith. 3. Many people self-identify …   more ›

NH Towns to Keep an Eye on Tuesday

UNH political science professor Dante Scala tells us which towns he sees as bellwethers for who New Hampshire will go for in the presidential election.

In every big election, there are towns prognosticators look to as indicators of how a particular state, or even the entire country, might vote. These bellwether towns can provide an early sign of what the final result is going to be. We asked University of New Hampshire political science professor Dante Scala to tell us which Granite State towns he thinks will be bellwethers in Tuesday's presidential election between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Working-class Rochester and other northern Strafford County towns like Farmington, Strafford and Northwood were among the ones he mentioned. He also cited Seacoast communities like Hampton, North Hampton, Rye and Stratham as potential bellwethers, because they're a bit well-off, but …

Election Notebook

Big NH Races Could Go Down to The Wire

The four biggest races are all too close to call with five weeks remaining.

Who's up, and who's down? With all of the different polls being released each week, it can be tough to keep track of who's winning which race. For example, a Rasmussen poll released last week had Mitt Romney up 3 percent on Barack Obama in New Hampshire. But an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll and another by ARG had Obama leading Romney. Real Clear Politics does a good job of averaging recent polls, and according to their average of the three polls mentioned above, Obama is leading by 3 percent. So who do they have leading some other key races in New Hampshire? Republican Ovide Lamontagne has a slight 1.4 percent lead over Democrat Maggie Hassan, according to the Real Clear Politics average, making it a virtual toss up. And though there are no…

Biden: Romney a 'Nice Guy' But 'Out of Touch'

Vice President Joe Biden slams Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan on platforms, opinion that nearly half the country is 'dependent' on government.

Vice President Joe Biden wasted little time before ripping into presidential candidate Mitt Romney's jobs, tax and health care plans on Saturday afternoon. Inviting Democratic congressional candidate Carol Shea-Porter and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Maggie Hassan to the stage, Biden spoke for about 40 minutes before a crowd of around 500 in the gymnasium at Merrimack Middle School. Biden candidly called Romney “a nice guy,” but said the GOP candidate is out of touch – criticizing the recent 47 percent remarks made by Romney. Biden made several examples of the people Romney said consider themselves “dependent” on government, the so-called victims: The soldier in Afghanistan sitting in a bunker, under attack and not paying taxes on …

Cilley to Co-Chair Hassan Campaign for Governor

The former rivals embraced for the first time at a Democratic Unity breakfast Sept. 13.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Before a packed room of Democrats spilling out the front door, former gubernatorial opponents Maggie Hassan and Jackie Cilley embraced for the first time, signifying the party coming together in the wake of the state primary. The two announced at The Puritan Backroom in Manchester that Cilley will co-chair Hassan's campaign against Republican nominee Ovide Lamontagne with eight weeks remaining until the November election. "I am so honored that Jackie has agreed to co-chair this campaign for governor," Hassan said to lengthy applause. "I am proud to endorse Maggie Hassan," Cilley said. "I served with her for four years on the senate under her leadership, and I expect her to be a great governor." According to Hassan, …

Déjà Vu: Bass vs. Kuster, Guinta vs. Shea-Porter

Familiar fights under way for NH’s congressional districts.

Welcome to the Rematch, 2012 Edition. In the 1st District, Republican incumbent Frank Guinta will go up against Democrat Carol Shea-Porter, the former two-term congresswoman he defeated in 2010. Shea-Porter faced no opposition in Tuesday's primary, while Guinta easily fended off challenges from Rick Parent and Vern Clough. In the 2nd District, Republican incumbent Charlie Bass will again face Democrat Ann McLane Kuster, who lost to him by just 3,550 votes two years ago. Kuster had no primary opponent on Tuesday, and Bass defeated Gerard Beloin, Will Dean, Miroslaw Dziedzic, and Dennis Lamare for the Republican nod. The Associated Press called both the 1st and 2nd District Republican primaries shortly before 9 tonight. Bass was first …
