Are You Excited About Shopping at Whole Foods?

Confirmed! Whole Foods is coming to the Turnpike Plaza in 2014.

After an alert Nashua Patch reader sent us this: "Drove by the Turnpike Plaza at exit 7W Nashua and there is a WHOLE FOODS sign there - says coming soon," we called Heather McCready, who handles public relations for Whole Foods North Atlantic region.

"Yes, Whole Foods is coming soon, to the Turnpike Plaza on Amherst Street. We're looking to open in 2014. Unfortunately, I don't have any other details for you at this time."

McCready did send along this statement from Laura Derba, Regional President of Whole Foods:

"We are so excited to have this opportunity to bring Whole Foods Market to New Hampshire. We have been searching for the perfect location to serve the community with a full shopping experience and we are pleased to have found it in Nashua."

This information has many of you "over the moon" as the saying goes, after months and years of anticipation.

So what's the big whoop?

Well, for many of the 4,500+ people who saw our post Tuesday on Facebook, it's the idea of a supermarket that says it's committed to "whole" foods, based on the supermarket's stated "quality standards" which include the following, from the company website:

  • We carefully evaluate each and every product we sell.
  • We feature foods that are free of artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners, and hydrogenated fats.
  • We are passionate about great tasting food and the pleasure of sharing it with others.
  • We are committed to foods that are fresh, wholesome and safe to eat.
  • We seek out and promote organically grown foods.
  • We provide food and nutritional products that support health and well-being.
Whole Foods also has a list of ingredients you won't find in their products, which you can view here.

And the company has also made a commitment that every product they carry will be labeled by 2018 with information as to whether it contains genetically modified organism (GMOs), and posts a blog about how that process is going. That is a huge deal to many people who want to know what they're eating and agree with the company, that transparency is essential.

You will, of course, be paying more for this kind of shopping experience, in dollars and cents, but many argue that if it's true, that we are what we eat, then if you don't pay for it at the cash register, you will pay for it with your health.

Now you know.
