Your background /education/experience/occupation:

I received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Illinois (many years ago).  Over the years I have raised three children, owned an antique shop, sold real estate, created a pre-school, taught special needs children and, as the wife of a military officer, moved every two years (including three overseas moves.)  Today, my children are grown and I have retired from the work force.  I am able to devote all of my time to work on city issues.

Personal info and interests outside of politics:

I enjoy all types of arts (theater, ballet, music etc.)   I collect antiques and unusual artifacts (I am a flea market buff). Travel is wonderful. Having lived in Europe I want to explore more of my own country.

Should you be elected, how will you connect with your constituents to learn more about issues they care most about?

Nashuans routinely call me on the telephone (603-880-7752) or email me (barbaravia@aol.com).  I am accessible and available to discuss issues at all times and enjoy being approached.

In your opinion, what are key issues affecting your Ward?

The two most important issues facing the City of Nashua today are increase in crime and lack of open government (transparency). Crime is changing. It now reaches into our neighborhoods and strikes closer to home.  We must be more vigilant and aware of our surroundings.

Transparency is a problem.  All of our work and discussions should be in the public forum. No more private meetings behind closed doors.

Why are you running?

I know the job and can make a difference.  I have always valued and enjoyed the democratic principles of decision making. Being an Alderman is not a stepping stone for me.  It will be the last elected office I hold. I believe I speak up for everyone but particularly those whose views are ignored.  Small businesses and seniors on a fixed income are two groups in particular.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents (what uniquely qualifies you to represent the public)?

I am experienced, independent (beholden to no one), open minded, and have the time and energy to give to the job.  I am not afraid to challenge the “status quo”.   I also seek the complete story and explore the issues by asking appropriate questions.

During your time served previously as an Alderman, how would you characterize your leadership approach? What will be your legacy to the city for having served?

My leadership style is being approachable, a good listener, caring and one who seeks creative solutions.  I hope to be known as an environmentalist and one who values our history and our government decision-making principles that protect our freedom.  My10-year effort to purchase our water delivery system to keep our natural resources locally controlled is a special source of pride.  (We still need to be watchful of how things are being run at the new Pennichuck Corporation).

I ask for and appreciate your vote.  Thank you,  Barbara Pressly
