Honoring Doris "Granny D" Haddock in Nashua on Jan 24, 2014

Doris "Granny D" Haddock
will be honored for her tireless battle against big money in politics with a birthday celebration at the UU Church in Nashua
on Friday, Jan 24, from 3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Although Granny D 
passed away in March 2010, her inspiration continues to energize NH citizens and
her friends throughout the country to pave the way for public financing of
elections, especially in the wake of the lamentable Citizens United case.


What: A celebration
of the life and legacy of Granny D, who was born in Laconia, NH, on January 24,
1910.


Where: Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua, located at 58 Lowell St,
Nashua, NH.


When:
Friday, January 24, from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

This event will also be the
finale of the 13-day march organized by the New Hampshire Rebellion, which
begins on January 11th in Dixville Notch NH, and ends on January 24th in Nashua. Prof. Lawrence
Lessig of the Harvard
Law School
will be continuing Granny D's work to end the corruption of our political
system and support the efforts of the Coalition for Open Democracy and other

groups to introduce legislation that will favor small contributions from
citizens instead of six-figure advertising budgets of SuperPacs.

The program at the Nashua
celebration will include remarks from:
  • Governor Maggie Hassan who will issue a
    proclamation for Granny D Day,
  • a presentation by Hedrick Smith, Pulitzer Prizewinning author and NY Times columnist,
  •  Buddy Roemer, former Louisiana governor
  • and Prof. Lawrence Lessig,
  •  as well as music by Fred Simmons and Leslie Vogel,whom Granny D called her "personal band". 

    The public is invitedto attend.

Doris Haddock (January 24,
1910 – March 9, 2010) was a political activist from New Hampshire. Haddock achieved national
fame when, between the ages of 88 and 90, starting in California on January 1,
1999, and culminating at the Capitol in Washington D.C. on February 29, 2000,
she walked over 3,200 miles (5,100 km) across the continental United States to
advocate for campaign finance reform.
