Gas Tax Hike: Can You Afford It?

Give your 2 cents on this proposed 4-cent increase.

A bill to increase the state's gasoline tax by 4 cents, from 18 cents to 22 cents per gallon, is picking up additional legislative support in Concord.

The New Hampshire Senate previously passed the bill – which also authorizes the state Department of Transportation to remove the tolls at Exit 12 on the Everett Turnpike in Merrimack – and a House committee endorsed it this week. Revenue from the 4-cent rate increase would be dedicated to funding transportation improvements, chief among them finishing the widening of Interstate 93.

If passed and signed into law by Gov. Maggie Hassan, it would be the first increase in the state's gas tax since 1991. Critics, however, have said the increase will be a burden for small businesses and working families.

Can you afford it? Let's hear your 2 cents on this proposed 4-cent increase.
