Good Crowd for Annual Apple Festivities

As always, a good time was had by all who attended the annual fall fest.

Air as crisp as a Cortland apple, and a crowd as dedicated to having a good time as always at Sullivan Farm Saturday for the annual Salvation Army Applefest.

"I'd say we have a few thousand here today, and we're very happy with the outcome, given the weather," said Jennifer Horn, Director of Development and Community Affairs for the Salvation Army. "We would have liked a little more sunshine, but everyone's having a great time, anyway."

Horn said the crowd was thin at first, but by midday things were going well for the annual fundraising event, which benefits the Salvation Army.

Early on, the first-ever Applefest Recipe Throwdown was a crowd pleaser, with a panel of seven judges on hand to pick a winner from the top 15 entries across three categories.

Judges were: Mayor Donnalee Lozeau; Alderman Mark Cookson; former Mayor Bernie Streeter; WZID radio personality Mike Morin; Miss New Hampshire Samantha Russo; Nashua Telegraph Encore Magazine editor Kathleen Palmer; Jeremy St. Hilaire, owner of Great Harvest Bread Co.; and David Quimby, Nashua High School North's culinary arts instructor.

Winners were judged by a point system on: appearance, use of apples, taste, texture and creativity. The top three dishes were prepared by:

  • Barb Driscoll, fresh apple walnut cake
  • Karen Stanger, irresistible apple of your eye cheese cake
  • Jessie Leckheart, classic apple pie
Also, Mayor's Choice award went to Linda Sellner, for an Roasted Apple Pork pot pie dish, which Lozeau commented appealed to her French-Canadian palate.

Another new attraction this year was the Apple Slingshot, which drew a steady crowd of apple slingers, taking aim at four targets for a chance at earning more tickets for attractions.

Of course, what keeps people coming back year after year are the favorite attractions, including pumpkin painting, face painting, make your own scarecrow, a host of games, a bouncy house, hayrides, a chance to sit inside a Nashua Fire Truck and the Crime Scene lab, lots of great food and endless apple pie.

We'll follow up in the next day or so with an update on this year's earnings for the Salvation Army.
